Bet Sizing Mistakes in Poker
It is important to remember that bet sizing is a key skill in Texas Holdem Poker Game. It’s an aspect where a lot of amateur poker players struggle when they are first introduced to the game. If you are unable to make the correct sized bets at each stage of the hand, you will have a very prominent loophole in your game. By being able to make the correct size bets, you will be able to maximize your wins and minimize your losses.
The most important thing is to be aware of your stack size at all times, the size of the pot, and what you are trying to achieve when you are in the pot. Therefore, it is advisable to keep your bets consistent and think ahead.
If you have a good hand and feel that your opponents have a worse hand than you, you should be looking to bet around 3/4th of the pot when you make a bet.
When to Make a Bet Big?
There are 2 main reasons when to bet big. First of all, it gives opponents incorrect pot odds to continue with drawing hands. Secondly, you get lots of value (win more) when your opponents call with worse hands.
When to Make a Small Bet?
Most of the time it is not good to bet small i.e. half the pot or smaller; however, there are always exceptions. The only time you should bet small is when you know that you are not going to get outdrawn and that your opponent will only call a smaller bet as opposed to a larger one.
Raising before the flop
If you are making a raise before the flop, you should be looking to raise around 3 or 4 times the size of the big blind.
Rule of Thumb
Always avoid minimum bets and raises. Either make a strong bet or don't bet at all.
