Thuan B. Scotty Nguyen has made his mark in the world of poker as an enthusiastic and highly proficient poker player who has played many tournaments and won many titles. He is a Vietnamese American professional poker player who won 5 World Series of Poker bracelets has a total earnings $49,52,420. Scotty Nguyen is also much well-known by his nick name Prince among other players.
Scotty Nguyen was born on October 28, 1962 in Nha Trang, Vietnam when the country was under war. He had total 13 siblings and he was the eldest. In the year 1973, he fled to Taiwan and spent 3 years in a refugee camp of his life waiting for a family who would sponsor him. God listened to his prayers and a family from the United Stated showed interest to endorse him and took him to Chicago at when he was only 14 years old. His first 6 months in the U.S was not smooth because of frosty weather and so he was relocated to a family in sunny Orange County, California where he attended school. He developed too much interest towards this card game and so was expelled from school.
At the age of 19, Scotty Nguyen moved to Las Vegas. In this fascinating city, he searched for jobs and worked as a bus-boy and cleaned tables at the Holiday Inn. After spending 2 years in various jobs, he decided to learn poker and enrolled his name in a poker dealer school and got a job in Harrah’s poker room. To know about the game he also dealt in various poker tables. But eventually, he decided to try his poker skills and luck and started playing poker and since then he has proved himself to be a great poker player. By playing poker he has amassed immense wealth.
In his life, Scotty Nguyen confronted many economical ups and downs. However, his bad times didn’t last long and after 2 years he started playing poker full-time.
Luck showed his favour in 1985 when he played at the Lake Tahoe to deal in a no-limit Hold’em tournament and made whopping cash. Eventually, Scotty decided to return to Las Vegas where he won up to $1,000,000. With his winnings, Scotty purchased a Chevrolet Camaro, a Corvette and a condominium all in cash.
Scotty Nguyen is a five times World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet winner and also well known for his victory in the 1998 World Series of Poker Main Event. He also won the 2008 WSOP $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. World Championship. His victory in both the WSOP Main Event had made him one of the prominent poker players.
In the 1997 World Series of Poker Scotty won the $2,000 Omaha 8 and earned the amount of $150,000. But he spent the bankroll and was compelled to play in a small satellite tournament as he didn’t have enough money to buy into. However, Mike Matusow, an American professional poker player noticed Scotty Nguyen’s poker skills and propelled a bankroll 1/3 of the buy in. Nguyen won the 1998 World Series of Poker and shared the winnings with his friend Mike. At the 1998 Main Event, he made a remark his opponent Kevin McBride which became quite popular: "You call, it's gonna be all over baby!"
Soon after his triumph in 1998 one of his brothers’ death news saddened him and so Scotty does not wear his 1998 WSOP championship bracelet.
Scotty Nguyen played several tournaments and even participated in many World Poker Tour (WPT) final tables. However, after many attempts he finally won a WPT event in January 2006 by vanquishing Michael Mizrachi in the fourth season Gold Strike World Poker Open. This WPT victory made him one among the 5 poker players to have won both a WPT title and the main event of the World Series of Poker.
He also secured a second place finish at the 2007 WSOP in the seven card stud high low split eight. After this victory Scotty Nguyen didn't play cash games for two years because he feels that he feel cosy in serious cash games making it difficult for him to play.
Scotty also participated in the 2007 World Series of Poker Main Event and ended by securing 11th place out of a field of 6,358.
In 2009, Scotty Nguyen captured the inaugural LA Poker Classic $10,000 H.O.R.S.E World Championship at the Commerce Casino's annual LA Poker Classic Series and the winnings was $339,743.
As per the estimates in 2010, his winnings exceed $11,250,000 in live tournaments.
He also made appearances on the Ultimate Blackjack Tour playing Elimination Blackjack and on Late Night with Conan O'Brien in the year 2004.
Scotty Nguyen in the year 2012 was named as team captain of the Expekt Poker pro team for EPT Deauville that includes Julian Kabitzke and Jack Salter.
He won World Series of Poker bracelets in the following tournaments: $2,000 Omaha 8 or Better (1997), $10,000 No Limit Hold'em World Championship (1998), $2,500 Pot Limit Omaha (2001), $5,000 Omaha Hi-Lo Split Eight or Better (2001) and in $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. World Championship (2008).
