Pot Limit Omaha Poker

Omaha poker is one of the most popular games in the world. Moreover, as the gaming industry is evolving and becoming more and more technologically advanced, this variant of poker, along with Texas Holdem Poker, is gaining immense popularity.

People say that poker is a game of luck. However, it is one of the most common myths that need to be busted as soon as possible. Once you start playing Omaha online poker, you will realize that it is not true! Rather, poker is a game of skills and mind and one cannot emerge as a winner if he or she has not practised for long enough. Before understanding how to play this wonderful game of the mind, let us first discuss the different types of this particular variant of poker.

Omaha Poker Variations

Understanding the different Omaha variants can be really exciting. For starters, let us first learn what is Omaha High/Low.

Omaha Hi/Lo

Firstly, if you know even a little bit about the game of poker, you will know that the winner receives the pot. Moreover, you will also be knowing that the player with the highest-ranking will win the game. However, in Omaha High/Low, the pot is divided into two equal parts - equally between the player who has the best high hand and the one who has the best low hand (for example when all the cards (in the combination) are either 8 or lower than that).

5-card Pot-Limit Omaha

This is quite similar to the standard Omaha variant, just that instead of 4 hole cards, this variant has 5 hole cards that are distributed to all the players.

5-card Pot-Limit Omaha Hi/Lo

This is a mix of the above two variants where again, the best high and the low hands win.

Courchevel

This is one of the most exciting variants of Omaha because it complicates the game a little so there is more fun and adventure. Here, one community card is shown by the dealer to all the players before the first round of betting. This will help the players make a more informed decision and create a more effective Omaha Poker strategy.

  • Pot-limit- In this type of variant of Omaha, the maximum amount a person can bet cannot be more than the pot value.
  • No-limit - This seems quite self-explanatory - As the name suggests, in No-limit Omaha there are no limits to betting. A person can make a bet of any amount. But the minimum value of the bet should at least be equal to that of the big blind.
  • Fixed Limit - As the name implies, in this type of variant, the betting and raising amount is already decided in advance. Therefore, it is called ‘fixed’.

Now that we know about different types of variants of Omaha online Poker, let us also discuss some important Omaha Poker rules.

Objective: The objective of the game is that the players must aim to make the best combination of 5 cards out of the pocket and community cards. However, there is a catch. Here is it - the players can only use 2 of their pocket cards (and 3 from the community cards) to make the best combination.

The Dealer & The Blinds

If you know even a little about Texas Holdem poker, you will know what blinds are. However, first, let us understand what a dealer button is. The dealer button is responsible for having the dealer who manages all the players and distributes all the cards to them. Moreover, he or she is the last one to act in the game. Now that we know what a dealer button is, let us move on to what are blinds.

To simply it for you, blinds are forced bets that every player is supposed to make. There are 2 types of blinds -

  • Small blind- This is the mandatory or fixed amount that the player sitting on the immediate left to the dealer must pay.
  • Big blind-This is another forced bet that the player must give in order to play the game. The player sitting on the left of the small blind usually plays big blind. According to the rules, the big blind amount or value is always double that of the small blind.

Now that we understand what blinds are, let us discuss different betting actions that every player can take.

Stages of The Game

  • Check- If before you, no player has made any bet in the current round, you can ‘check’, which means ‘pass’ your chance without putting anything in the pot but still staying in the game. Please note that this cannot be applicable in the first round of betting because everyone has to match the betting amount of the big blind in that round.
  • Call- This simply means to put the amount equal to the last bet placed (in the current round) in the pot. It is simply about matching the earlier bet in the same round.
  • Raise- If you choose this action, you will increase the bet placed by the previous players. The next players must match this bet (CALL) in order to stay in the game.
  • Fold- This simply means to quit or give up the game and losing the money or chips you had already put in the pot.
  • All-in- This happens when the player puts all his or her money into the pot. However, please note that this is applicable only in the no-limit Omaha variant of the game.

These are dealt face up and can be seen by anyone. This will help the players understand their best combinations and Omaha poker hands better. The first person from the left of the dealer button starts the second round of betting. The second round will continue till every player has put an equal amount of chips or money in the pot.

The rest of the round will continue like the previous one.

The River

The Showdown

As mentioned above, this round only happens if there are more than two people in the poker game. If only one player remains after the last round, the pot goes to him or her and he or she is declared as the winner. However, if two or more than two players are left in the game, it is time for Showdown. The players who are still a part of the game will now show their cards. The player with the highest Omaha card rankings is the winner of the game.
