What is Razz Poker Game

Razz is a popular variant of the stud card game, it is quite similar to the Seven Card stud game the only difference between both is that in a Razz game, the lowest poker hand wins the game. It is a mature form of poker that developed around the start of the 20th century. It got popular around the time people started playing with a deck of 52 cards instead of 20 for poker.

The main aim of Razz is to make the best possible five-card hand from the seven cards. Generally, in Razz, Straight and flushes are not counted against the player for low, and the ace is always considered low. It requires a different strategy than traditional poker games, as players must focus on making the lowest possible hand instead of the highest.

The best possible hand in Razz is as follows:

5-4-3-2-A, or 5 high, also known as "the wheel" or "the bicycle"

How to Play Razz Poker?

Now that we understand the meaning of Raaz poker, it's time to know how it's played:

  • Raaz is similar to playing like a seven-card stud but in it, the player with the lowest hand wins the pot.
  • Each player is dealt seven cards, but only the best five cards are used to form a complete hand.
  • In Razz poker, it's important to note that aces are considered low.
  • The number of participants in Raaz is usually from 2-8 players.
  • Straight and flushes are not considered in Razz.
  • The worse your poker hand the more your possibilities of winning the game increase.
  • In Raaz, A-2-3-4-5 is the best hand, and the fun fact is that you will lose the game if you have this hand. As mentioned above, the worse your poker hands are, the better you win.

Let's understand through situations:

1st Situation: 4-5-6-7-8 and 5-6-7-8-9 ( which hand is better)

The better hand is 4-5-6-7-8. It is because 8 is a smaller number when compared to 9.

2nd Situation: 4-5-6-7-8 and A-2-3-4-5 ( which hand is better)

The better hand is 4-5-6-7-8. It is because A-2-3-4-5 is the best hand but it will make you lose the game.

  • Spades (♠) is the highest possible suit, followed by hearts (♥), diamonds (♦), and clubs (♣).
  • The K♠ is the worst possible door card in Razz
  • The game is played in a clockwise direction.

As they say, "Practice makes a man perfect." The same applies to Razz as well.

Razz Poker Rules and Betting Structure

Now that we understand the basic gameplay, it's time to look at the Razz poker rules and betting structure. Let's look at how cards are dealt in Razz. Let us consider a fixed-limit razz game with Rs.4/Rs.6.

  1. The betting structure is rigid in the Razz game.
  2. The player places his bets.
  3. The dealer distributes three cards to each player after that the player can choose his door card. The betting round starts here. In this round, all bets must be equal to or more than above mentioned Rs.
  4. Then the fourth card is dealt face-up to all players. The betting starts with the player who has been dealt the lowest card. Again, for this round bets must be equal to or more than Rs.4.
  5. After the fourth card, the fifth card is dealt face-up to all the players. In this round, players bet more on the fifth round. So, in the Rs.4/Rs.6 razz game, the players will bet Rs.6.
  6. The sixth card is dealt face-up to all the players in the sixth round. This time again players need to bet matching the Rs.4 amount.
  7. The final card is dealt face-down in the seventh round, and betting resumes, matching the Rs.4 stake.
  8. If two players are still in the game, a showdown round is held in which all players show their cards. The player who is left with the lowest five-card hand is the ultimate winner in the finale.
  9. The major difference between a betting round in Razz and a betting round in Stud depends on how you decide if your actions start for the hand.
  10. The only difference between a betting round in Razz and a betting round in Stud is how you decide where the action starts for the hand.
