Widely regarded by many as the best poker player of all time, Doyle Brunson has bagged 10 World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelets in his career and became WSOP champion twice, back to back, in 1976 and 1977.

Personal Life

Born on August 10, 1933 in Texas, USA, Doyle Brunson is an ardent poker player and interestingly continues to played cards for more than 50 years. Brunson not only has a deep interest in the exciting poker game but also has set standards of excellence for the game against which other players are measured.

He was born in a poor family and liked basketball. He was part of the state team, used to run to keep fit and also won the championship for one-mile run. He was offered admission in various colleges because of his athletic and basketball skills, but unfortunately could not see that dream being realised. He met with an accident in his summer job, in which he broke his leg and never quite became normal again.

His goals became education-oriented and he completed his Masters, but life was to take another turn. After college, he was a salesman and on his first day in the job he got an invitation to play in a poker game where he earned more money than his full month’s salary and that too in less than three hours. The decision to take up poker full-time was not far off. He soon left the company and became a professional poker player.

When Doyle Brunson joined Poker, it was not very well taken within the society. Poker existed in the cradles of criminals and outlaws. Elite, educated and the middle class avoided playing it. But Brunson was the one who proved that even poker, much popular as a gambling game, could be a professional game.

Tournaments

During that time, the illegal poker games were usually run by gang of criminals and Brunson began his career by playing in some of these games. He traversed miles looking for good games, trying to stay safe from both the police and the criminals. It was during his travel to other big games, that he met other professional players and legends like Benny Binion, Amarillo Slim and Sailor Roberts. Eventually, he settled in Las Vegas, and the next part of the saga began. Since then he never ever turned back. With a career spanning over forty years, he has a long list of accomplishments.  Brunson has earned respect as an author of several books on poker. He penned the Bible of poker “Super System” which is regarded as the premier Poker book by the pro-poker players published and is a must read for all wannabe Poker players. After the success of this book, it was followed by popular strategy books and memoirs. Doyle Brunson is also the author of “Poker Wisdom of a Champion”, originally published as “According to Doyle” in 1984.

Playing for more than 50 years, the Godfather of Poker is still going strong. Paradoxically, he inculcates in himself two opposite attributes; being deeply intertwined with the world of gambling and yet he remains a simple and spiritual man. For his fans and enthusiastic poker players, Doyle F. Brunson has launched his own website www.Doylebrunson.com giving a clear insight about his life and passion towards poker. Doyle F. Brunson even at the age of 75 continues to play poker with full spirit at the elite level. His spirit and skills have encouraged many poker players. He also continues to write a poker column in the London Telegraph. Winning and losing is also a part of his life. In his interview with the History Channel, Doyle said, "to be a successful gambler you have to have a complete disregard for money." According to statistics of 2011, he has won more than $6,000,000 in all the live tournaments put together.
