Started in 2002 by Steve Lipscomb, the World Poker Tour (WPT) is one of the most prestigious and widely recognized poker series in the world. The WPT has travelled around the globe hosting tournaments in various countries, with each stop featuring a blend of local and international players. In recent years, the WPT has been expanding its reach to new markets, and in 2023, the WPT is set to host an online tournament in India for the fourth time.

All About WPT 2023

The WPT India series has been a resounding success, and this year's event aims to be even bigger. Unlike the previous three editions, which consisted of only seven to eight events, this year's series will feature an incredible 13 events. 

The prestigious live poker series will once again be headlined by the Main Event, which has a buy-in of INR 65,000 and runs from April 13 to April 17, 2023. The Main Event will have three starting flights, with Day 2 and the Final Table being held on April 16 and 17, respectively.

Players who want to enter the Main Event for a lower buy-in can participate via three gateways, including a 10K buy-in Satellite (April 12, 8:30 PM), 15K buy-in Satellite (April 12, 8:30 PM), and 6,500 buy-in Flips (April 14, 7 PM).

High rollers across the country can join the 1.25 Lac buy-in WPT High Roller, which is scheduled to run from April 16 to 17. Players who want to participate in the high roller event for less can compete in the INR 20,000 buy-in satellite on April 15 at 8:30 PM and earn a ticket to the high roller.

The WPT schedule for this year features a range of exciting events catering to players of all buy-in levels, with buy-ins ranging from INR 15K to INR 1.25K. Along with the Main Event and High Roller, there are other major attractions, including the 50K buy-in Freezeout (April 12 -13), 30K buy-in Mini Main Event Freezeout (April 16 -17), 40K buy-in PLO (April 13 -14), 30K buy-in Teams NLH Freezeout (April 14), and 30K buy-in Big Bounty NLH - 15K Bounty (April 17 -18).

Background of WPT India

In April 2016, Adda52.com became an official India partner of WPT to bring the opportunity for Indian poker players to play the coveted WPT events in their own country. 

In November 2017, the WPT made its debut in India, taking place at the Deltin Royale in Goa. With over 1500 poker enthusiasts participating in eight events, the inaugural series was deemed a resounding success. Vikash Mantri emerged as the winner of the Main Event after defeating a record-breaking 527 entries, earning him INR 60.30 Lac. The 2018 edition of the WPT India saw 1800 entrants, and the Main Event boasted a record field of 697 entries, with Nikunj Jhunjhunwala ultimately emerging as the champion and winning INR 66.35 Lac.

In October 2019, WPT India returned for its third edition, with more than 1500 entrants competing in the series. The Main Event drew an impressive 630-entry field, and Ashish Munot took down the Main Event title, earning a whopping INR 63.48 Lac. However, due to Covid-19, the WPT India series was held online in 2020 on Adda52.com, and it was a raging success, with 60,434 entrants participating in the series. Kumar Sahaj emerged as the winner of the INR 2.50 Crore GTD WPT India Main Event, earning INR 50 Lac for his victory. The series returned for another online edition in 2021 from August 1 to 30, with Kushal Sogani winning the 3 Crore GTD WPT Main Event and earning INR 47.45 Lac, a WPT trophy, a Hublot watch, and a $5,000 WPT Passport.

In 2022, there was no WPT event in India due to Covid-19 restrictions. However, with the restrictions lifted, the prestigious series is set to return to India for its fourth edition with WPT Prime India 2023. This promises to be a perfect opportunity for seasoned pros and newcomers from across the country to make their mark on the global poker map.
